Salisbury

Salisbury is a very unique track that offers flat racing throughout the fat racing season. Races up to a mile are run on a straight-course with races further that a mile using a sharp turn that allows horses to double back on themselves. This means that horses will start by running up the home straight in the opposite direct in races of 1m 4 furlongs and further. Salisbury is a local course to Richard Hannon and combined with stable jockey Richard Hughes they are never far from the Salisbury winners enclosure and often use Salisbury for some of the galloping 2 year old types – whilst preferring Windsor among others for a sharper type of horse. Whilst also holding several Listed races at Salisbury – one of the highlights of the Salisbury racing calendar is the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes. There have also been a number of highly regarded horses and jockeys who experienced success around Salisbury – none less than Eclipse in the 18th century and Brigadier Gerard more recently (1970) as well as Derby hero Sir Percy, whilst Lester Piggott started what was to turn into a legendary career shortly after World War 2 in 1948.
